Mechanical Repairs You Should Schedule When Your Vehicle Hits 100,000 Kilometres

Posted on: 29 June 2020

Has your vehicle hit the 100,000-kilometre mark? If yes, it is time to consider an engine overhaul. Below are some considerations to make as you conduct mechanical repairs for vehicles with 100,000 or more kilometres.

Start with an Inspection

At 100,000 kilometres, your vehicle may have multiple issues. As such conduct an inspection to determine the following:

  • Engine and transmission leaks. Oil seals and gaskets may be worn out hence causing leaks. Severe leakage could damage internal components.
  • Signs of reduced power. As such, use a dynamometer to know the amount of power lost through the years.
  • Signs of rust. Remove the seats, check the underneath and frame for rust and cracks that might let in dust, water and pests.
  • Whether the vehicle may need a fresh paint job. This is especially true if it has faded paint dents and chips on the body. The mechanic can offer some suggestions.
  • Electrical system conditions. For example, some of the power window switches may need replacement. Besides, the air conditioning system may require servicing.
  • Condition of the tires. Uneven wear is a sign that the vehicle needs balancing or alignment. Additionally, check the shocks, bushes and tie rods.

Determine Vehicle Use

How do you intend to use the vehicle in the future? For instance, if you need to use the car on the track, you need to change the tires, suspension components, air intake, turbos, exhausts and intercoolers. If you intend to use the vehicle off-road, you should install stiffened suspension, off-road tires, a lift kit, bull bars and LED lights.

Engine Overhaul Tips

The timing belt should be changed at 100,000–150,000 kilometres depending on the car manufacturer. While you're at it, change the pulleys and the serpentine belt. Conduct a compression test to know whether you need to replace the valves, cylinder head and piston rings. A healthy engine has around 135psi. However, anything above 100psi is still considered healthy. Check the condition of the crankshaft. You should replace or rebuild it if has uneven wear. Change the fuel injectors, fuel pump and spark plugs as you overhaul the engine. If the vehicle has transmission problems, you may need to check the gear selector, flexplate or torque convertor. You should also clean the cooling system to get rid of gunk and mud in the radiator. Loose or cracked hoses should be changed.

The 100,000-kilometre service will return your vehicle into a near-new state. It may be expensive, but you will avoid the need for frequent repair appointments. Besides, it will significantly improve the value of the vehicle, and you will enjoy years of stress-free service.
